[ xxi ] Izumo grand shrine; the chief shrine outside the official mythology of the Yamato tribe. It is located in Shimane prefecture on the Japan Sea side ( see S hinto shrines ) [19: 326–53; 34: 6–7, 184–7]. It is dedicated to Okuninushi-no-mikoto, K ami of fishing and sericulture, whose anti-Yamato hostility was mitigated by the gift of a palace and generous annual tribute, and who was traditionally given authority over the religious affairs of the country. Although rebuilt on a smaller scale after a sudden collapse in 1031, the shrine is still the largest in Japan.
