[ xxxiv ] A term with two meanings. (1) In the interpretation of sacred scripture, acceptance of statements at their face value or ‘according to the letter’, as opposed to interpreting them symbolically or metaphorically. (2) In theories of religion, a method of explanation which regards R ituals and other religious actions as accounted for by beliefs about the world (for example, a D ance occurs because the participants believe that S pirits can be induced by it to give rain), and as functioning as instruments of control of the conditions of life, rather than as symbols.
