[vi] Important in daily life, Egyptian magic was based upon the ‘sympathetic’ principle, affirming that the spoken name or image of a living being or an object created the presence of the original. The magician could then control it, either by magical rites or by the recitation of formulae [17: x, 229]. It was used as a protection against hostile forces: illness (see Mansion of the gods), ferocious animals and Egypt's enemies.
