[ xix ] The Islamic term for ‘spirit’, in usage difficult to separate from nafs , ‘soul, self, the permanent individuality of man’ [37 ‘Nafs’]. The soul is immortal and will survive the last day and judgement (Q iyama ) and return to God. Among Sufi mystics ( see S ufism ), the idea of the pre-existence of the soul (e.g. M uhammad 's) appears. The spirit is conceived as the vital spark which God blows into a person but which departs at death. The term ruh is also used of angels (M ala'ika ) and, in the Q ur'an , of ‘the spirit’ sent by God to man, which in revelatory contexts is equated with Gabriel.
