[ xix ] (Persian and Turkish: namaz ) The sequence of utterances and actions making up the Muslim worship (better than ‘prayers’), accounted one of the P illars of islam. Its performance at five points of the day, from dawn till evening, is prescribed for all able-bodied adult believers. It may be performed alone, but congregational worship, e.g. in a M osque , is more meritorious and is obligatory on F ridays.
