The following subject lists have been compiled separately by the contributors of articles in the Dictionary and inevitably there are some instances of overlap and inconsistency. The subject scope of each list reflects the specialities of the contributor. When there are a number of compilers, they are listed alphabetically, unless one compiler is primarily responsible for this section of the bibliography. The editions listed are not exhaustive: the first is that to which any page references are made. A later edition or reprint date may follow, but this does not indicate that the work is in print and ‘new edn’ does not necessarily indicate revised text: often it is a paperback edition. Two publishers noted before one date indicates a joint English/United States publication, with the same pagination.
