Russian author and journalist. He was born in Kiev. He was exiled from 1908 to 1917 for revolutionary activities. On his return to Russia in 1917 he opposed the Bolsheviks and he again left the country in 1921. He returned once more in 1941 and became a spokesman for Stalin. He wrote against Nazi anti-Semitism and Zionism. He was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1942 for his novel The Fall of Paris and in 1948 for The Storm .
