Babylonian tanna. In his youth he lived in Palestine, but later he settled in Babylonia, where he remained until his death. He was the greatest scholar in Palestine at the time of the Hadrianic persecutions. He established the calendar in exile, which was followed by the Jews of Babylonia. After Hadrian's death, the Sanhedrin was reconstituted and called on him to recognize its authority.
