Israelite leader. As Moses' successor, he was assigned the task of leading the people in the conquest of Canaan. He commanded the Israelites in the war with the Amalekites (Exodus 17.14–16). Later he was one of the 12 spies sent to reconnoiter the land of Canaan. After the Israelites had crossed the Jordan, Joshua led them to victory over the alliance of southern kings, and then the northern kings.
