Jaffe, Mordecai ben Abraham (c. 1535–1612)

Talmudist, kabbalist, and communal leader. He was born in Prague. He studied in Poland under Solomon Luria and Moses Isserles, then returned to Prague, where he became head of a yeshivah. Later he settled in Venice but he eventually moved back to eastern Europe and was appointed av bet din and head of the yeshivah of Grodno (now in Belorussia). He subsequently lived in Lublin, Kremenets, Prague, and Posen.
