Israelite prophet. When he first emerged as a prophet he rebuked the nation for idolatry. After the religious revival that marked the reign of Josiah, Jeremiah warned the people to keep the newly made covenant with God. When Nebuchadnezzar became king in Babylonia, Jeremiah prophesied that he would conquer Judah. Later he foretold the defeat of Zedekiah and his anti-Babylonian alliance, and advocated surrender.
