Kohut, Alexander (1842–1894)
Extract
American rabbi and scholar, of Hungarian origin. He served as a rabbi in Stuhlweiss-enburg, and later became chief rabbi of Fünfkirchen. In 1885 he left for the US, where he served as rabbi of Congregation Ahavath Chesed in New York. He helped to establish the Jewish Theological Seminary, where he taught midrash and talmudic methodology. His Arukh ha-Shalem is a lexicon of talmudic terms based on the talmudic dictionary of Nathan ben Jehiel. ... log in or subscribe to read full text
