City in southern Poland. Its Jewish community developed from the 14th century. Many outstanding rabbis and scholars flourished there, as well as intellectual leaders, during the 16th–18th centuries. In the 18th century Jewry in the city was initially opposed to Ḥasidism and the Haskalah, but both movements eventually gained supporters.
