Galician philosopher and historian. He was born in Brody, and lived in Zolkiew in Galicia. Later he returned to Brody, and eventually moved to Tarnopol. He was a leading figure in the Haskalah movement and the founder (in the 1830s) of Wissenschaft des Judentums.
