The marriage of a man with his brother's childless widow. Such a marriage is prescribed if the deceased brother has left no offspring (Deuteronomy 25.5). Release from the obligation of such a marriage may be obtained through performance of the ceremony of Halitzah (Deuteronomy 25.7–10).
