The descendants of the tribe of Levi. Moses consecrated them to serve in the Tabernacle and instruct the people; they were therefore in attendance upon the priests. Each family of Levites was assigned specific duties. The Book of Chronicles records that David divided them into separate groups with different functions in the Temple.
