(Hebrew “Va-Yikra”) Biblical book, the third book of the Pentateuch; it was formerly known in Hebrew as Torat ha-Kohanim (“Law of the Priests”). It contains laws given to Moses concerning sacrifice, impurity, moral instruction, and social legislation. Chapters 1–7 deal with sacrificial laws; chapters 8–10 with the installation of priests; chapters 11–16 with physical purity and unclean animals; chapter 17 with prohibitions against eating meat that has not been sacrificed; chapters 18–22 with moral instruction; chapter 23 with festivals; chapter 24 with regulations concerning the Tabernacle; chapter 25 with sabbatical and jubilee years; chapter 26 with blessings for observance and curses for non-observance of the law; and chapter 27 with valuations and devotion to sacred usage. ... log in or subscribe to read full text
