City in the Ukraine, formerly the capital of Galicia. Jews lived in the city from the 13th century. During the Chmielnicki massacre in the 17th century, the community suffered great losses. From 1759 the Jews were confined to a ghetto, but in 1867 they were permitted to reside in other areas. Many outstanding rabbis and leaders of the Haskalah lived there.
