Syrian general. He was appointed ruler of the western sector of the Seleucid empire by Antiochus IV Epiphanes in 165 bce . Charged with crushing the revolt of Judah Maccabee (I Maccabees 3.31–7), he was defeated at Bet Tzur. He subsequently invaded Judea, defeated Judah at Bet Zechariah, and besieged Jerusalem.
