Ukrainian Ḥasidic rabbi. Initially he engaged in ascetic practices and fasting. After studying with the Baal Shem Tov, he became a maggid, spreading Ḥasidism in Russia and the Ukraine. He collected money for ransoming Jewish captives and for other charitable ends.
