American Reform rabbi and scholar. He was born in Czerniejewo, and served as a preacher and teacher in Waren. From 1857 to 1865 he was head of the Jewish school in Copenhagen. He emigrated to the US, where he served as a rabbi in New York and later became a professor of Talmud and rabbinic literature at the Hebrew Union College. His writings include Introduction to the Talmud, The Jewish Law of Marriage and Divorce and its Relation to the Law of the State , and The Introduction of Slavery among the Ancient Hebrews. ... log in or subscribe to read full text
