The art of influencing events by the occult control of natural and spiritual forces. In the Bible sorcery, witchcraft, and magic are prohibited (Exodus 22.17). Nonetheless the Bible, Talmud, and later Jewish literature abound with examples of magical practices. Magical activities connected with divine names, the names of angels, permutations and combinations of Hebrew letters, and scriptural quotations flourished under the influence of kabbalah.
