German Hebraist and reformer. He was born in Ingelheim. He taught Hebrew at Heidelberg, and became professor of Hebrew at Basle University in 1528. One of the outstanding Christian Hebraists of the 16th century, he edited the Hebrew Bible, translated the Gospel of Matthew into Hebrew, wrote grammars of biblical Aramaic and rabbinic Hebrew, and translated the grammatical works of Elijah Levita into Latin. ... log in or subscribe to read full text
