Semi-desert region in southern Israel. David's conquest of the Amale-kites and of Edom (I Samuel 30; II Samuel 8) opened up Elath and the copper mines there to the Israelites under Solomon, which led to the development of maritime trade. The division of the kingdom in 930 bce led to the decline of Judean power in the Negev. Under Uzziah, roads in the Negev were developed (II Chronicles 26.10).
