American merchant and philanthropist. He was born in Springfield, Illinois. He first worked in his uncle's clothing store in New York, but later opened his own store. He began to manufacture summer clothing and in 1885 moved his business to Chicago. He became president of Sears, Roebuck, and Company, and subsequently chairman of the board. He was president of the Associated Jewish Charities of Chicago, and contributed to Jewish war relief during World War I and in the postwar period.
