English historian. He was born in London. He was a reader in Jewish studies at Oxford from 1939 to 1964, when he settled in Jerusalem and became visiting professor at Bar Ilan University. His publications include histories of the Jews of England and Italy, Jewish biographies, a history of the Marranos, a study of Jews in the Renaissance, and studies of Jewish art.
