City in Bavaria, southern Germany. Its Jewish population dates from the 12th century. In the 13th century Meir ben Baruch settled there and attracted students to the city, but in 1298 the community was devastated during the Rindfleisch persecutions. The Jews were attacked again in 1349 in one of the series of massacres sparked off by the Black Death.
