Sforno, Obadiah ben Jacob (c. 1470-c. 1550)

Italian biblical commentator. He was born at Cesena, Sforno. He taught Hebrew to Johannes Reuchlin in Rome (1498–1500). After living in various cities, he settled in Bologna, where he helped to reestablish a Hebrew printing house and organize the Jewish community. He founded and ran a bet midrash there. He wrote commentaries on the Pentateuch, Songs of Songs, Ecclesiastes, Psalms, Job, Jonah, Habbakuk, and Zechariah.
