Talmud, burning of the
Extract
From the Middle Ages the attempted suppression of Judaism led at intervals to the wholesale destruction of copies of the Talmud and other Jewish texts. The first official burning of the Talmud took place in Paris on 17 June 1242, in response to the Disputation of Paris of 1240. From that time on, similar destruction of rabbinic texts was carried out intermittently. On 9 September 1533 vast numbers of rabbinic texts were destroyed in Rome; this was followed by similar attacks throughout northern Italy.
