A mystical or religious experience in which a supernatural event or person is seen, or knowledge beyond normal human understanding is gained. A vision may be sought by mystical practices or may occur spontaneously. It may reveal terrestrial events removed in space and time, or spiritual realities and symbols. On the highest level in the Jewish tradition visions are the means by which God's will and purpose are made known to prophets. Visionary accounts occur frequently in apocalyptic literature, and are discussed in talmudic texts, though the Talmud does not itself generally record visions.
