War for Israeli independence fought in Palestine in 1947–9. After the UN resolution passed on 29 November 1947 to partition Palestine into Jewish and Arab states, Palestinian Arabs initiated hostilities against the Jewish population; they were soon joined by volunteers from Arab states. Jewish forces were largely organized in the Haganah. In May 1948 the forces of the Arab League invaded the country. Eventually, between February and July 1949, armistice agreements were signed between Israel and Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria; these permitted Israel to maintain a defensive force in the Negev desert. ... log in or subscribe to read full text
