Extract
(“Father of the law court”) Title conferred on the president of an ecclesiastical court. During the period of the second Temple the title was given to the vice-president of the Supreme Court in Jerusalem. In gaonic times it designated the assistant to the gaon of the academies in Babylonia and Israel. From the 14th century a local rabbi, the head of a yeshivah, or the district rabbi of a large community used the title.
