The belief in the duality of body and soul is not found in Scripture. In rabbinic literature, however, the body is regarded as the seat of passion and the cause of sin, though both body and soul are accountable for misdeeds. The human body is viewed as the possession of God, of which human beings are simply custodians. At death the body must be kept inviolable; hence Orthodox Jews are opposed to cremation, dissection, embalming, or any other violation of the body's integrity.
