Brenner, Yoseph Ḥayyim (1881–1921)

Hebrew author and editor of Ukrainian origin. He edited the Bund newspaper in Homel in 1898. His sketches of Jewish poverty in Russia appeared in 1900 and were followed by his novels In Winter and Around the Point. From 1904 to 1907 he lived in London, where he published the journal Ha-Meorer , which criticized Jewish political life. Later he lived in Lemberg, where he edited Revivim. In 1909 he settled in Palestine and became a leader of the workers' movement; his stories of this period describe contemporary Palestinian life. In 1919 he became the editor of the journal Ha-Adamah.
