The dispersion and settlement of the Jews outside Palestine after the Babylonian captivity. When the Temple was destroyed in the 6th century bce large numbers of Jews settled in Babylonia. From the Hellenistic period onward Jews lived in many lands, including Islamic and Christian countries. In the Middle Ages Jews in northern and western Europe were much persecuted and often expelled from the countries in which they lived. Eventually they gravitated to eastern Europe, then to the US; many also sought to return to Palestine.
