(Hebrew “get”) The dissolution of a marriage. It is effected in Jewish law by a bill of divorce termed “sepher keritut” in Scripture (Deuteronomy 24.3) or “get” in the Talmud. This bill is written by the husband and handed to his wife in the presence of witnesses. Biblical law stipulates that divorce is permitted if the husband finds an “unseemly thing” in his wife (Deuteronomy 24.1). This phrase was diversely interpreted by rabbinic authorities.
