A central task of Christian thought has been the clarification of the identity and significance of Christ for the church and the world. The most important debates centring upon Jesus Christ to be dealt with in this volume may be found under the following headings. 1 B iblical criticism and interpretation 2: new testament . The debate over how a historical event (the history of Jesus Christ) can be the foundation for a universally valid system of belief. 4 F eminist theology . This entry deals with the question of whether the maleness of Christ is of decisive significance in relation to his perceived relevance in modern western culture. 5 G od . An issue of recurring importance in relation to the Christian doctrine of God concerns the manner in which the historical figure of Jesus Christ is constitutive or determinative of God.
