The Indonesian variety of Malay is called Bahasa Indonésia ‘Indonesian language’. Its orthography in Roman letters was standardized and unified with that of Malay in Malaysia in 1972. It is very regular and largely phonemic. Prior to the 1972 reform the spelling system was based on the Dutch values of the letters of the alphabet, having evolved during the colonial period (table 4).
