Mormon alphabet

A script created in the 1830s for English by Joseph Smith (1805–44), founder of the Mormon sect, who claimed that it was revealed to him in 1823 on golden plates by an angel. The characters are arbitrarily designed, although some of them resemble alphabetic letters ( table 22 ). The script represents an attempt at designing a writing system for English which approximates a one-to-one mapping relation between sounds and symbols independent of traditional orthography.
