[Sanskrit nāgar ‘city’, lit. ‘city’ or ‘metropolitan’ script] Derived from the old Brāhmī, Nāgarī is the most widely used script of India. It has official status for Hindi, Marāthī and Nepali, and is also used for literary varieties of Rajasthani, Dogri and Maithilī, as well as Pahari (Kumanni) when written.
