An Iranian language spoken by the Pathans of Afghanistan as well as north-western Pakistan, Pashto has been written in Arabic letters since the sixteenth century ce . In addition to the four letters added to the Arabic P ersian alphabet , the Pashto alphabet has another ten supplementary letters to accommodate Pashto sounds ( table 4 ).
