A rounded calligraphic style of the Arabic script which came into existence in the late eighth century ce . One of the six major scripts of Islamic calligraphy (the S itta ), it is characterized by great plasticity which allows letters to be bent, stretched or compressed for decorative purposes. Its principal use is as a decorative script for architecture and small objects, but it also occurs in manuscripts ( Figure 5 ). It was popular among the Ottoman Turks who called it sülüs or rīḥānī after Rīḥān, a calligrapher credited with its design. See also A rabic scripts ; C alligraphy . Reading Schimmel 1984.
