[Italian zëticula ‘little zed’] The cedilla is a diacritic mark <,> derived from the letter <z> which in French and Portuguese was placed under a letter, often <c>, to indicate a pronunciation that deviates from its normal pronunciation in a certain environment. Thus, French <c> is usually pronounced [k] before [a] and [o] as in franco [frãko], but it is [s] with the cedilla as in français [frãsɛ].
