[Gk χɛ i ρó ‘hand’ + γραφoς, ‘writing’] A formal written document. The term ‘chirographic’ is occasionally used in the study of orality and literacy , especially where it is important to mark the distinction between handwriting and print. Learned or classical languages such as Latin, Classical Arabic and Classical Chinese have been called chirographically controlled languages’ as they depend on the written medium rather than speech for their development.
