Jeanette Altarriba , Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Psychology and Linguistics and Cognitive Science at the University at Albany, State University of New York. She received her degree from Vanderbilt University in 1990 in the area of Cognitive Psychology. Her primary research interests are in bilingualism, second language acquisition, and language representation. Ad Backus studied Linguistics at Tilburg University in Holland, where he received his Ph.D. in 1996. He has held research fellowships from the Netherlands Science Foundation and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences and is now an Assistant Professor at Tilburg University. His work is mostly on Turkish and language contact. E-mail: A.M.Backus@uvt.nl . Gerald P. Berent , Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Research, National Technical Institute for the Deaf, Rochester Institute of Technology. His primary research interests concern the English language characteristics of deaf children and adults and the comparison of deaf learners' acquisition of English with hearing learners' acquisition of English as a second language. Tej K. Bhatia is Professor of Linguistics and South Asian Languages at Syracuse University.
