(1882–1937) Spent his schooldays in Tbilisi, georgia , and graduated in mathematics at Moscow University in 1904. He joined the staff at the Moscow Theological Academy in 1908, taking holy orders in 1911. In 1914 he published his most famous work, The Pillar and Ground of Truth, subtitled An Essay on Orthodox Theodicy in Twelve Letters , in which he drew upon many diverse philosophical and metaphysical themes. In seeking to ground Christian doctrine in religious experience Florensky demonstrated the importance of such things as icon painting and the liturgy as sources of eastern orthodox theology. Like other Russian thinkers who renewed their acquaintance with Orthodoxy in the early years of the twentieth century, he shows a predilection for sophiology . He was well respected as a mathematician and a scientist, as well as a theologian and a polyglot. He was imprisoned by the Soviet authorities in 1933 and died in a labour camp some four years later. In recent years his writings have proved an inspiration to a new generation of thinkers in Russia. ( 1997 ), Pavel Florensky: The Pillar and Ground of Truth . Princeton : Princeton University Press .
