(1798–1868) a greek catholic of Ukrainian priestly extraction. Graduated from the Vilna seminary in 1820 and was ordained priest. In St Petersburg he worked to improve Greek Catholic-Orthodox relations. He became bishop of Mstislav and Belarus, then of Lithuania (1833). In 1839 Iosif presided over the Reunion of Polotsk, leading the lithuania and belarus Greek Catholic dioceses into the Orthodox church.
