(d. 1985) Greek Orthodox priest of Santa Cruz in California, credited with numerous miracles of healing since his death. He ministered to the unemployed, homeless and drug addicts of the city before being brutally killed by a couple with a history of mental illness. John Karastamatis is widely commemorated on 6 May, though his cult has not won universal support and illustrates the controversy that can arise over the precise boundaries of categories of sanctity.
