Extract
Manuel Philes (fourteenth century) refers to the relics of St Kali. This may be Kali of Lesbos, commemorated with her daughter Thomais (early tenth century) ( see maria of bizye ). Kyra Kali , the Good Lady, is an important figure in Greek folklore. This Kali, however, represents the unsubdued forces of nature, and seems to derive from the huntress goddess Artemis, one of whose titles was Kalliste, Most Beautiful. Lawson, writing in 1910. records that in Aitolia her name was Kyra Kálo, but that in Athens ‘until recently’ she was known as Hagia Kali, ‘to whom no church was ever dedicated’. St Kore or Korina, revered in northern Greece, may similarly have merged with the folk memory of Persephone or another ancient deity. ( 1984 ), Hagiopoieseis . Thessaloniki : n.p.
