The editors would like to thank Professor John Hinnells, formerly of the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, and now research professor in the University of Derby, for his help and advice during the early stages of planning this volume. Thanks for help and advice are also due to Professor John Elsworth of the Department of Russian Studies, University of Manchester. We would also like to thank Mr Constantine Leventis for his generous donation towards the cost of Father Aidan's line drawings. We trust that the inclusion of these line drawings will enhance the usefulness of this reference work to our readers. Sadly, as the Blackwell Dictionary of Eastern Christianity was on its way to press, a distinguished contributor, Professor Hilary Armstrong, died. He was a fine scholar and teacher and a remarkable man whose contribution to the study of later Platonism was of seminal importance, especially to students of Eastern Christianity. His work invites a new approach to the relation between philosophy and Christian thought in late antiquity and the early mediaeval period, and will long remain a milestone.
